Local youth center needs volunteers to succeed

I work for a non profit organization that provides a community center for children from K-12th grade.

The Hot Spot was a great success and something very important to the children of Clearlake. It gave them a place to unwind, relax, see their friends, do their homework, get on the Internet, read a book, play basketball, baseball, football. And most of all when I did my dances for the kids every Friday it gave the parents a babysitter for four hours on Friday night.

Someone felt jealous enough to go and break out nine windows in The Hot Spot. Not appropriate. Now the city isn”t funding The Hot Spot.

A very special lady (Joan Moore) plus her staff spend an enormous amount of their time everyday opening The Hot Spot for the children. All proceeds that come from the dances go back to the children. Proceeds help keep the electricity and water on; the food we don”t sell is given to the kids as snacks and refreshments. Proceeds also help buy supplies for student activities through the week, etc.

All we ask is if there is any hope for the kids we have to start with the man in the mirror. I have 150 kids who love coming to The Hot Spot every week. I enjoy the heck out of the kids. They allow me to smile.

To volunteer time or make a donation, contact Joan Moore at The Hot Spot, 994-7281.

Women bear the brunt of violence and suffering

If the women of the world would shed the tears they feel as a result of the violence perpetrated against them, and in their name, all wars would end today.

City of Clearlake needs to be more cooperative

My brother and I are concerned about the representation, or lack of, that we recently experienced when we tried to have the City of Clearlake remove a tree that blocks our driveway and potentially can cause a number of problems, including cracking of the sidewalk and damage to water pipes as well as difficulty maneuvering around as a potential road hazard. I wrote a letter to the City Administrator, Dale Neiman, requesting that the tree be removed. The response I got was that the tree is healthy and removal is not necessary.

As a landowner and a taxpayer, I cannot believe that my tax dollars do no good to have this situation rectified. The tree is approximately 4 feet in diameter and makes it very unsafe and inconvenient to pull in and out of our driveway. I believe it has been a hindrance in the potential sale of this home as well.

We own six more lots, purchased with the plan to build more homes on them. It appears that the City of Clearlake has no interest in bringing in more revenue that building these homes would generate. This makes us feel very frustrated.

I believe the City Administrator should be concerned with public safety and show more concern toward matters that could be easily resolved. Since this is a city responsibility, the manner in which we were disregarded is very disappointing.

Support ?Gold Star” plates to honor servicemembers

Since the time our great nation was founded more than 200 years ago, thousands of Americans have given their lives to protect the freedoms that some people simply take for granted such as the freedom of speech and the freedom of religion.

Honoring these heroic men and women is one of our nation”s most time-honored traditions. For that reason, we believe that California should have a “Gold Star Family” license plate to honor those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

As legislators, we are proud to author Senate Bill 287. This bill establishes a prestige vehicle license plate to honor family members of servicemen and women killed while serving on active duty during any war or conflict. As part of that effort, we want to encourage you to send letters of support for SB 287 to Senator Denham”s Capitol Office via fax at (916) 445-0773 or via email to Senator Denham”s Legislative Director Jennifer Tannehill at jennifer.tannehill@sen.ca.gov.
