PHOENIX, Ore. — Led by Robbie Avery and Thomas Martinazzi, the Upper Lake High School wrestling team finished third in a round-robin tournament held Thursday and Friday in Phoenix, Oregon.

The Cougars went 3-2 in duals against five other large-school teams.

“Eureka was the only other California school there,” Upper Lake coach Tom Cox said. “We wrestled against some of the best schools in Oregon and did well.”

Avery, wrestling up two divisions at 145 pounds, not only won all five of his matches but also beat Oregon”s top-seeded 135-pounder by a 6-3 decision.

“He beat some very good wrestlers,” Cox said.

Martinazzi, competing at 119 pounds, also went 5-0.

Fwee Chao went 4-1 and Mike Diggs went 3-2 in the combined 103-112 divisions.

Also going 3-2 were Randy Dickinson at 171 pounds, Russell Dickinson at 130 pounds and Brandon Sneathen at 140 pounds.

Randy Dickinson lost one of his matches in overtime and another by a single point.

“Both of the guys he lost to are top-ranked wrestlers in Oregon,” Cox said.

Next up for Upper Lake is the Mustang Invitational on Jan. 4-5 in Middletown.
