MIDDLETOWN — Middletown”s defense clamped down on St. Vincent”s Claire Chadwell in the battle of Mustangs on Wednesday night during a North Central League I interlock varsity girls” basketball game at Middletown High School.
But the St. Vincent Mustangs, behind 15 points from Chadwell, still scored enough to beat the Middletown Mustangs 45-36, snapping a two-game Middletown winning streak.
Middletown (5-11) twice made runs at St. Vincent in the second half only to be turned away.
“We got a little frustrated near the end,” Middletown coach Marnin Pyzer said.
On defense, the Mustangs made it a point to keep track of Chadwell wherever she was on the floor. A night earlier, the post player scored 31 points in a win over Lower Lake.
“I felt as a team we did a nice job containing her,” Middletown coach Marnin Pyzer said. “Kelsey Welton was on her all night.”
Kayla Welton scored a team-high 14 points for Middletown and Amber Preusser added seven.
St. Vincent led 22-14 at halftime.
On Tuesday night, Middletown topped the 50-point mark for the first time this season with a 52-35 interlock victory at Upper Lake.
“It was nice to see us move the ball around as well as we did,” Pyzer said. “That”s the best we”ve done all season with our passing.”
Kayla Welton scored 12 points and Kelsey Welton had 11 to spark the Mustangs.
Cierra Peel”s 13 points powered Upper Lake and Caity Falge added six.
Middletown led 23-9 at halftime.
