LUCERNE — Two were injured when a man riding a motorcycle struck a man crossing Highway 20 Friday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Lucerne resident Jes Shoaf, 36, stepped out into Highway 20 from the south side at its intersection with the Nice-Lucerne Cutoff, where according to CHP officer Adam Garcia, there was no crosswalk. Shoaf was hit by Upper Lake resident Grant Murray, 73, who was riding a 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle west on the highway.

Murray was thrown from his motorcycle and was taken to Sutter Lakeside Hospital with moderate injuries, according to a Monday CHP press release. Shoaf, who authorities believe was under the influence of alcohol, suffered major injuries and was also taken to Sutter Lakeside Hospital. No update was available regarding either man”s condition.

Garcia did not say whether or not Shoaf was crossing legally, but said the investigation is ongoing. “There were witnesses who said they nearly missed Shoaf prior to accident,” Garcia said.

CHP officer Mark Barnes is investigating the incident.
