LAKE COUNTY — The Lake County Board of Supervisors authorized the purchase of property in Lucerne Tuesday that is unofficially earmarked for use as a Lake County Sheriff”s Department substation.
The $300,000 purchase agreement gets the Lake County Redevelopment Agency (RDA) and the County of Lake two adjoining parcels along Highway 20, at Seventh Avenue. Deputy RDA director Eric Seely told the board that the land”s location next door to the Lucerne fire station and across the highway from Lucerne Harbor Park as points that make it “desirable for a law enforcement office on the Northshore.” The board approved a purchase option Dec. 17, 2007.
“The citizens of Lucerne appreciate this,” Dist. 3 Supervisor Denise Rushing said Tuesday. Her district encompasses Upper Lake, Nice, Lucerne, Glenhaven and Clearlake Oaks. “I was at the senior center this Saturday, and they were very, very supportive of this. This was in the town survey. Having a sheriff”s presence in Lucerne is a very important step. In addition, this is actually a good step for the economy of Lucerne to have county employees based there.”
Rushing moved to approve the purchase agreement and the board voted 4 ? 0 in favor, with Dist. 4 Supervisor Anthony Farrington absent.
Mitchell told the board in December of a need to distribute his deputies throughout the county by establishing three operation areas, including the main office in Lakeport, the proposed substation in Lucerne and a substation that has not materialized in Middletown.
