LAKEPORT — Upper Lake”s undefeated Robbie Avery won at 140 pounds and Clear Lake”s undefeated Tyler Hayes won at 112 pounds during Wednesday”s Coastal Mountain Conference tri-meet turned dual at Clear Lake High School in Lakeport.
Citing weather-related traveling problems, the St. Helena Saints bowed out of the match, leaving Clear Lake and Upper Lake do go at it alone. Upper Lake prevailed 45-33 to the delight of the visiting Cougars and coach Tom Cox.
“This is big for us,” Cox said. “I think it”s the first time Upper Lake has beaten Clear Lake in like 10 years. Clear Lake has a great program, but our kids were pointing to this one.”
Cox”s only regret is that Avery didn”t meet Clear Lake”s once-beaten Erik Jameson at 135 pounds, which was the night”s anticipated big match.
“We were a little disappointed,” Cox said.
Jameson moved down to 130 pounds, where he pinned Upper Lake”s Russell Dickinson. Avery pinned his opponent at 140 pounds.
Upper Lake”s other winners were James Lolonis at 103 pounds; Amos Burns at 145 pounds; Antonio DiConza at 152 pounds; Ben Britton at 160 pounds; Brian Hatfield at 215 pounds; and by forfeit at 125 and 135 pounds.
Clear Lake winners besides Jameson and Hayes were Jordan Mills at 119 pounds, Chaz Ballew at 171 pounds, Daniel Gildea at 189 pounds and Derek Milhaupt at 275 pounds.
