FORESTVILLE — Middletown High School”s wrestling team finished a strong second during the Last Chance Duals Tournament on Saturday at El Molino High School in Forestville.
Middletown knocked off Casa Grande (Petaluma) 45-27, Montgomery (Santa Rosa) 35-24, and a combined Santa Rosa High and Piner High (Santa Rosa) team 36-27 to reach the finals against El Molino. The host Lions prevailed 57-14 as Middletown gave up 24 points in forfeits.
“We”re still recovering and I honestly don”t want to have my kids hurt in a tournament this close to CMCs (Coastal Mountain Conference championships), so I sat two kids out completely,” Middletown coach Troy Brierly said.
“Everyone wrestled well with just a few oops along the way,” Brierly added. “Now we have two tri-meets this week and hopefully we can find a way to make up the dual against Upper Lake somehow.”
Matt Dakin won all four of his matches at 160 pounds and 152-pounder Taylor Hoefer went 3-1, his only loss a 5-4 decision to Eric Yust of Montgomery, who is one of the top-ranked 152-pounders in the North Coast Section.
The Mustangs return to action Wednesday against Lower Lake and St. Helena at St. Helena. Action begins at 5 p.m.
