KELSEYVILLE — It could have been the Phoenix Suns and the Dallas Mavericks. Instead it was the Clear Lake Cardinals and Kelseyville Knights combining for 11 3-pointers in the first quarter Wednesday in Kelseyville.
Clear Lake scored 22 points to Kelseyville”s 21 in the opening period and the Cardinals went on to beat the Knights 60-56 in North Central League I interlock varsity boys” basketball action.
“Both teams came out red-hot,” Kelseyville coach Scott Conrad said of the first-quarter fireworks. “We thought we were the Phoenix Suns. It was easily our best scoring quarter of the season.”
Clear Lake”s Corey Dillon scored a season-high 24 points for the Cardinals (11-11), including six 3-pointers, of which four came in the first quarter. Jameson Holder added 20 points.
Isaac McQueen”s 18 points powered the Knights (11-12), who led 34-32 at halftime. Mike Duman added 10 points, 14 rebounds and five assists.
Clear Lake outscored Kelseyville 18-2 at the free-throw line but Conrad said he had no gripes about the officiating.
“They did a better job of forcing the issue and getting to the line than we did,” Conrad said of the Cards.
Conrad also said his team turned in a solid effort.
“We did a good job of listening and making some adjustments at the end of the game. We just needed a few more shots to fall,” Conrad added.
