MIDDLETOWN — Too many turnovers translated into two dozen miscues by the Middletown Mustangs during a 39-31 loss to the Willits Wolverines on Thursday night in a North Central League I North varsity boys” basketball game at Middletown High School.

“We weren”t moving the ball, we were telegraphing everything,” Middletown coach Mike Mullin said.

And when they weren”t turning the ball over, the Mustangs also weren”t shooting it much.

“We don”t seem to have anyone on this team other than Tyler Hunt who wants to shoot the ball,” Mullin said. “We keep passing up open shots.”

Hunt led all scorers with 19 points, including two 3-pointers. The next highest scorer was John Hays, who also had two 3-pointers for six points overall.

The first half was a low-scoring affair as Willits led 12-11 at halftime, but a 16-6 third quarter put the Wolverines well out in front.

“We got it to six points with 1:10 left and we had the ball,” Mullin said.

But a Middletown turnover led to a Willits layup and an eight-point lead.

Hunt also had 11 rebounds while climbing to 16th place on Lake County”s all-time career scoring leader list (1,162 points, chart at right).

Middletown travels to Kelseyville tonight. Junior varsity action tips off at 6 p.m.
