I feel compelled to challenge the subliminal liberal biased exposed in the letter Friday (Record-Bee, February 8) by one, Holley Luia. In her letter, she asserts that if athletics were dropped from the curriculum, the question of what is or is not a permissible mascot would be a moot point.
However, what of the morale of the students who take pride in their schools athletic teams?
I guess under Ms. Luia that too is a moot point?
During the dark days of World War II, Winston Churchill was quoted as saying that the victories on the battle field was a direct result of the competitive spirit learned on the playing fields of Eaton. The “Liberals” and the “Progressives” all sing the same tune: Namely that boys need to be “neutered”.
Because if we honestly reflect the sports programs tend to center on the male i.e. ; Football, Basketball, Baseball, sports that involve learning to overcome an opponent while still maintaining a sense of sportsmanship and learning to sublimating the individual to the task of the team.
I am not forgetting young women at all, I fathered and am proud of my daughters, but when it comes to school sports women still are treated as second tier athletes.
Not fair, but fact.
It was John Wooden, who observed that “Sports do not develop character, they reveal it,” and George Will who was quoted saying, “Sports serves society by providing vivid examples of excellence”.
Follow the logic of Ms. Luia and our next generations will be governed by the Taliban.
