Senior Academy students at Lower Lake High School are putting their best effort forward to beautify their campus and bring unity to their school and community. Academy students have taken on a landscaping-type project that will serve as a memorial to staff members lost over recent years.
The focus of the project is a Fountain of Peace, which will be surrounded by beautiful plants and flowers native to the county.
Memorial plaques are intended to be placed honoring the lives of staff members who had served the students of Lower Lake High School prior to their passing.
The project, which was started by another class last year, is entirely environmentally-friendly including solar power for the peace fountain.
The students are learning valuable lessons in landscaping, botany and alternative energy. The students are also engaged in community service and outreach, writing letters of request for donations to complete the project.
Real Goods, in Hopland, is contributing to the project with its expertise in solar and alternative energy. Several local businesses have also stepped up to help the students with the project.
Those who are to be memorialized include past janitors Steve Rubio and David Carter; past para-professional Cindy Gilbert; and former substitute teacher Owen Lampman. The students hope to have the project completed by April for an Earth Day dedication ceremony.
If you would like to contribute to the Academy student”s Fountain of Peace project, donations may be sent to Lower Lake High School, c/o Ms. Shrive, Senior Academy Class, PO Box 5000, Lower Lake, CA 95457. Memo line should read “Fountain of Peace Project.”
