LOWER LAKE — A get-rich scheme unique to the Dark Ages is behind the action in “Incorruptible,” a Lake County Repertory Theater production. Curtain rises for its second weekend at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, and Saturday, Feb. 16, with a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Feb. 17, in Weaver Auditorium at the Lower Lake Historic Schoolhouse Museum.
Charles, Abbot of Priseux (Dick Griffin) presides over an empty cupboard and a patron saint whose bones have stopped working miracles. The local peasants still devoutly pray to Saint Foy but lack funds to support the monastery.
Goaded by his second-in-command Brother Martin (Randy Hare), Charles agrees to a scheme of selling fake “relics” to other monasteries. The monks coerce Jack, a one-eyed minstrel who is played by Rod Rehe, to do much of the dirty work for them.
The scheme works up to a point but then, in order to convince the Pope to visit their remote monastery, the monks claim to have an “Incorruptible,” that is, a saint who was so pure and holy while living that his or her flesh does not decay after death. With the Pope on the way, the monks must suddenly produce their Incorruptible.
The performance features many strong actors who also include Tim Barnes, Deb Bielenberg, Kathleen Escud?, Laura Fichtel and Pat Nunes. Stage set and wardrobe enhance the medieval atmosphere.
Production staff is headed by Suna Flores who directed, assisted by Joey Luiz, and Susan Yeagan who produced the performance.
