WINDSOR — Mike Diggs won three more matches — Nos. 101, 102 and 103 of his career — as the Upper Lake High School wrestling team went 1-2 on Saturday at the North Coast Section Small School Team Championship in Windsor.
Upper Lake beat California School of the Deaf 64-21 and lost two close matches to John Swett of Crockett, 41-40, and St. Patrick/St. Vincent of Vallejo, 42-32, in the team competition.
“It”s a pretty special thing,” Upper Lake coach Tom Cox said of 112-pounder Diggs, who becomes the first Upper Lake wrestler ever to reach the century mark in wins. “And Mike didn”t win a single match his freshman year, which is kind of amazing.”
Three other Upper Lake wrestlers also had perfect days, going 3-0. Rob Avery, a 135-pounder wrestling up at 140 pounds for the tournament, improved to 38-2 on the season. James Lolonis at 103 pounds and Jacob Warner at 285 pounds also won all three of their matches.
Avery is on pace to break Diggs” career mark for wins next season, according to Cox.
Upper Lake returns to action Saturday at the Coastal Mountain Conference Championships in Fort Bragg.
