MIDDLETOWN ? A multiple vehicle pile-up brought emergency responders, Hidden Valley Lake security and five California Highway Patrol cars to the intersection of Spruce Grove Road and Highway 29 Monday night.
The CHP log showed three vehicles involved as of 7:30 p.m., one of them on fire. Clearlake resident Chris Brooke said he and his wife were in the first car to pull up after the accident. “We were maybe 80 feet away from the accident. It was right in front of us,” Brooke said.
“There was a black Chevy pickup with a trailer flipped on its lid with the roof smashed in. We could see a guy moving in the car,” Brooke said. Brooke said security personnel from Hidden Valley Lake were on the scene directing traffic, and said he saw emergency medical technicians.
“The (security) guy was telling us there was an accident, and that people were still in the car from that accident, and the next group of cars didn”t see it and plowed right into it, and that”s how it turned into five or six cars,” Brooke said.
“We were coming around the bend, and I”m lucky my wife saw it before I did and started hitting the brakes. We almost got hit from behind,” Brooke said.
The CHP traffic log confirmed Brooke”s account that the Chevrolet truck was blocking both lanes of traffic, closing the highway and causing traffic to be rerouted.
The CHP log said a second traffic accident at the scene involved property damage only.
