The issue of the Kelseyville High mascot continues to make headlines in our community. I”d like to suggest that sometimes it helps to view an issue from a different perspective.
What if the mascot”s name were the Kelseyville African Americans? Or how about the Kelseyville Mexicans? How would you feel if the school mascot were the image of someone from either of these cultural groups?
Does this idea make you uncomfortable? It should. And the same discomfort should apply to the use of the word “Indians”. If it”s not right for a certain group, it”s not right for any group. If the Native Americans in our community are unhappy about the use of their name for the school mascot, then let”s do the right thing and not use it.
