LOWER LAKE — First-year Lower Lake High softball coach Tim Sherrill certainly knows the sport — his daughter Nicole once starred for the Trojans and later at Mendocino College — and he also realizes he has plenty of work to do if he”s going to turn a young Lower Lake squad into a contender.
Step one took place on Tuesday as the Trojans opened the season with an 11-2 loss to Vacaville Christian in Lower Lake.
“We have a lot of work to do, but I think they”re willing to do it,” Sherrill said of a team that boasts little in the way of returning starters — only two seniors. “I”m pleased with their attitude and the enthusiasm they showed today … they didn”t get their heads down when they fell behind.”
Vacaville Christian broke the game open with an eight-run top of the second against losing pitcher Kristen Garcia, who worked the first three innings. Reliever Brittany Shores allowed just two hits and one earned run over the final four innings, striking out two and walking none.
Shores and Stefanie Mederos each went 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored for the Trojans.
Lower Lake scrimmages at Middletown on Friday and hits the road Tuesday to play Healdsburg.
First pitch is 3:30 p.m.
