There may be no reason to have a mascot if the proposed cuts in local education comes to roost. Has anyone seen the press or heard of the massive cuts in our local education system? ? Twelve teachers and two administrators in Kelseyville alone.
Lakeport Unified School District has to cut $700,000 out of it”s budget. Konocti school district is facing a potential 40 teacher layoff. Add to this all the custodial and other support staff that will lose their jobs.
Our state government has once again screwed up the budget and is going to correct it by slashing money from our kids at a local level. Those of you who feel our state spends too much money on our kids education might like to know the following.
The Record-Bee reported the following from Education Week: “California spends $1,900 less per student than the national average, dropping the state from 43rd to 46th in the nation”. These cuts mean less help, less programs and less supervision for our kids.
The big cuts need to come at the state level, starting with the state board of education. Perhaps the legislators would be willing to give some of their salary back as a start to help the schools.
Whatever mascot Kelseyville picks it won”t have much to cheer for, if these cuts become a reality.
