MIDDLETOWN — Ryan Hansford pitched a one-hitter and shortstop Roman Rose went 3-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBIs as the Clear Lake Cardinals gave new head coach Paul Larrea a win in his debut, 12-0 over Middletown in a non-league varsity baseball game on Friday at Wes Martin Field in Middletown.

The contest was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule.

Eric Tomko”s single in the bottom of the fourth inning accounted for the Mustangs” lone hit as Middletown fell to 0-2 on the season.

Clear Lake (1-0) scored in every inning, including a four-run third and a four-run fifth.

Hansford, a junior, struck out five and walked one. He needed only 24 pitches to get through the first three innings and his lone walk came in the final inning.

“Ryan pitched extremely well,” Larrea said. “He threw strikes.”

Larrea also praised the play of sophomore catcher Ryan Lunas.

“He called a great game,” Larrea said.

Losing pitcher Dylan Galusha allowed seven runs on five hits in three innings and also walked five.

“We didn”t hit, we didn”t do anything,” Middletown coach Mitch Tucker said.

“Their pitcher threw strikes. Our pitchers issued nine walks.”

Clear Lake hosts two-time defending section champion John Swett of Crockett today at 2 p.m. The Clear Lake and John Swett junior varsity teams play at noon.
