MIDDLETOWN — A bad day only got worse for the Middletown Mustangs in a 14-0 North Central League I interlock loss to the St. Vincent Mustangs on Wednesday afternoon at Wes Martin Field.
St. Vincent (7-0) scored three times in the top of the first inning and never looked back against Middletown, which missed a chance to cut into that lead in the bottom of the first.
“We loaded the bases with no outs and couldn”t score,” Middletown coach Mitch Tucker said.
St. Vincent winning pitcher Ian Williams hit two batters and walked another to load the bases, but he got out of the jam with a popup, strikeout and ground out.
“That kind of set the tone,” Tucker said.
St. Vincent took a 6-0 lead going to the top of the fifth and scored eight times to bring an early conclusion to the game.
“It just wasn”t a good day for us,” Tucker said.
Losing pitcher Devin Nordin lasted 2 1/3 inn-ings, allowing five runs, and relievers Eric Tomko and Johnny Harmyki didn”t fare much better.
John Hays went 2-for-2 to account for two-thirds of Middletown”s hit total.
Andrew Meiswinkel went 3-for-4 with a home run for St. Vincent.
Middletown is 4-4.
