CALISTOGA — So much for rebuilding.

Jonathan Bridges fired a 1-under-par 69 that featured an eagle and Nick Schaefer fired a 1-over-par 71 to lead the Kelseyville Knights to an unexpected 10-shot win over St. Vincent in the first Coastal Mountain Conference South golf match of the 2008 season on Thursday at Mount St. Helena Golf Course in Calistoga.

“I”m shocked and I”m stunned,” Kelseyville coach John Berry said. “I thought this was going to be a rebuilding year.”

Bridges, Schaefer and Hipolito Perez, who shot a 78, all played on Kelseyville”s undefeated CMC South squad a year ago, but it”s an otherwise new cast for the Knights in the Nos. 4-5-6 positions.

“Perez is one of the better No. 2 guys in the league and I have two No. 1 guys in Jonathan and Nick,” Berry said.

Schaefer and Perez each had two birdies during their round. Bridges” eagle-two came on the 310-yard, par-4 second hole.

St. Helena finished third in team scoring with 436, Tomales and Middletown tied with 453 (Tomales won the sixth-man tiebreaker), Rincon Valley Christian had 481 and Calistoga was incomplete (fewer than five golfers).

Doug Quinones led Middletown with a 72 that included three birdies. Blaine Ruggio carded a 76 for the Mustangs and Lisa Copeland had 83.

Also shooting in the 70s were Rincon Valley Christian”s Ty Cazet at 74, Calistoga”s Raymond Fechter at 75, and St. Vincent”s Vinnnie Magliulo at 79.

The next CMC South match is April 3 at Adobe Creek in Petaluma.
