I noticed a blurb about child sex trafficking in the national section of the Tuesday Record-Bee (March 26, 2008). Thank you for printing that information about the prostitution of children in Las Vegas. It added to our community”s understanding of the issues surrounding modern day slavery.
Hopefully, as people begin to look further into the disgusting facts behind the sale of human beings, they will learn that twenty seven million people, mostly women and children, are enslaved today. Some work in the filth of the sex industry of San Francisco or Rome or Tokyo. Others are trapped as domestic slaves in Sacramento or Phenom Penh. Tens of thousands of child soldiers fight in Uganda. Cunning owners and slave traders designed a nearly unbreakable cycle of slavery, making it extraordinarily difficult for any of “the property” to escape.
Edmund Burke said “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.” I add a corollary to that. “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men know nothing.”
When we learn about local and global slave trade, we can begin to act against it. Please print more stories to remove our ignorance surrounding slavery. In the words of Abraham Lincoln, “I leave you hoping that the lamp of liberty will burn in your bosoms until there shall no longer be a doubt that all men are created free and equal.”
