CLEARLAKE — The Clearlake City Council authorized staff to file an application for a bikeway grant on Thursday, March 27. Following evaluation, city staff concluded that the highest priority should be Dam Road.
“Dam Road is a major street that serves the schools on Lake Street,” City Administrator Dale Neiman stated in his report to the council. “The road currently has about 3,000 trips a day and pedestrians and bikes use it to get to school.”
The project area consists of the section between Jack in The Box and Lake Street at the intersection for Cache Creek Apartments.
“This is something that is a desperate need,” Councilmember Joyce Overton commented during discussion of the regular agenda item.
The project is estimated to cost $238,000 and city would be required to provide a 10 percent match ($28,300), which Neiman said would be budgeted for next year. According to the staff report, the Area Planning Commission (APC) has allocated money for the city to prepare the grant applications and other paperwork for bikeway improvements.
Authorization to proceed was granted on a 4-0 vote with Councilmember Roy Simon absent from the meeting.
