KELSEYVILLE — Losing is one thing, losing when you don”t give your best effort is another.
“I was embarrassed by our performance,” Kelseyville High School softball coach Greg Giusti said of the Knights” 7-0 North Central League I interlock loss to the Clear Lake Cardinals on Tuesday in Kelseyville. “I don”t mind losing, but you at least want to show the quality of what you have and we didn”t do that today.”
Giusti said the Knights hit just one ball out of the infield against winning pitcher Liz Sanderson, who struck out three and walked three in going the distance for the Cardinals (8-3).
“We did not play up to the level that we”re capable of,” Giusti said. “We didn”t hit the ball at all.”
The one bright spot for Kelseyville (4-5) was Casey Bowlin”s pitching. She struck out nine and walked three.
“Casey Bowlin pitched well,” Giusti said. “That was about it for us as far as highlights.”
Clear Lake”s Mori Jordan provided plenty of highlights for the Cardinals, including a two-run home run over the center field fence in the top of the first that capped a two-out, three-run rally. Jordan also tripled among her three hits and she drove in three of the Cardinals” runs.
Jordan, Clear Lake”s center field, also provided the defensive gem of the game in the bottom of the fifth when her sliding catch snuffed out a Kelseyville rally in the making.
“Momentum was shifting,” Clear Lake coach Gary Pickle said. “If she doesn”t catch it, they score a bunch of runs and it”s a game.”
Candy Diener went 3-for-4 with two doubles and a RBI for the Cardinals.
