LAKEPORT — Auto racing returns to the Lakeport Speedway on Saturday, the first race of a full schedule in 2008 at the quarter-mile paved oval.

The season opener is one of two fan appreciation nights and tickets are only $5 for adults and $3 for children. The “best appearing car contest” will take place prior to the regular racing program.

Divisions running at Lakeport this season include modifieds, bombers, INEX Legends, Bandoleros and the Thunder Roadsters.

Among the special events are the 17th annual NCRA Founder”s Cup race on April 26 with modifieds, bombers, Late Models, mini-stocks and Nostalgia cars taking part, and the Memorial Day weekend doubleheader (May 24-25) featuring two nights of racing action, with the modifieds, bombers, mini-stocks, street stocks and Late Models participating. The Sunday card also will feature the “Fiberglass 500” boat races along with main events in all classes.

The Bay Cities Racing Association non-winged midgets and the BCRA vintage midgets make the first of two appearances at Lakeport on June 7. The open-wheel race cars return on June 21. Modifieds, bombers, Late Models, Nostalgia cars and the first of two demolition derbies are part of the racing card.

Other special events in 2008 include the 19th annual Kelseyville Lumber Deake Lyndall Memorial on July 4-5 featuring Legends cars, modifieds, bombers, street stocks, Late Models, Thunder Roadsters and Bandoleros. The Fourth of July weekend racing card also features the Lou Gehrig”s disease “Racin” for a Cure” fundraiser featuring Derek Thorn racing in the Late Model Class.

The championship points series for modifieds, bombers, street stocks and Late Models runs through Aug. 23.

The season wraps up with two special races. The Marlene Baker Memorial Bomber Bash No. 13 is Sept. 20 and the 19th annual KXBX October Classic is Oct. 17-19.

Lakeport Speedway is located at the Lake County Fairgrounds on Martin Street in Lakeport. Gates open on race day at 5 p.m. and racing begins at 6:30 p.m. Pits open at 10 a.m.
