LAKEPORT — Wrong sport, but legendary Chicago Cubs second baseman Ernie Banks could certainly appreciate the sentiment as the Clear Lake Cardinals and Geyserville Bronchos decided to play two — tennis matches, that is — on Wednesday in Lakeport.

Making up a match rained out on March 21 and combining it with a regularly scheduled match, the Cardinals and Bronchos played a tennis doubleheader. Clear Lake won both ends by the same 4-1 score. To make sure they wouldn”t run out of daylight, the two teams agreed to drop the best two-out-of-three set format and play one eight-game pro set instead.

In match one, Clear Lake winners were K.C. White, 8-1 over Matt Yanez in first singles; Nate Secrest, 8-0 over Alice Read in second singles; Tony Valdez and Hayden Gilbert, 8-2 over Petie Bensin and Joe Bensin in first doubles; and Patrick Yates and Humberto Perez, 8-4 over Nikki Stortroen and Kristin New in second doubles.

Geyserville”s win came in third singles as Kayla Singley beat Josh Blair 9-8 (7-4).

In the second match, Clear Lake won all but second doubles, where Geyserville”s Petie and Joe Bensin beat Claire Mansell and Nicole Copping 8-1.

In other matches, White defeated Yanez 8-0 in first singles; Secrest beat Read 8-0 in second singles; Valdez defeated Singley 8-3 in third singles; and Darcy McCarrick and Natalie Sylar beat Stortroen and New 8-4 in second doubles.

McCarrick and Sylar were playing their first high school match, according to coach Rik Hayes, who said he was impressed with their debut.

“I thought they really played well,” he said.
