KELSEYVILLE — The Lower Lake Trojans kept it close most of the game but the Kelseyville Knights pulled away for an 11-4 win in North Central League I North softball action on Tuesday in Kelseyville.
The Trojans (0-2 North, 1-12 overall) jumped ahead 2-0 in the top of the first only to watch the Knights (2-1, 8-8) rally for five runs in the bottom of the inning. Opposing pitchers Casey Bowlin of Kelseyville and Kristen Garcia of Lower Lake kept it a 5-2 game until the Trojans closed to 5-4 in the top of the fifth.
But just as they had done in the first inning, the Knights responded to Lower Lake”s two runs in the top of the fifth with three of their own in the bottom half. And they added to their 8-4 lead with three more runs in the sixth.
“I”ve been waiting for this team to break out and play this type of game, nice and crisp,” Kelseyville coach Greg Giusti said.
Second baseman Monique Santana, a first-year softball player as a sophomore, helped turn a 6-4-3 double play and also tripled and drove in two of Kelseyville”s runs.
“Since I moved Santana to second two games ago, she”s really helped shore up the middle of our infield,” Giusti said. “She”s quick and smart. She”s doing a great job.”
Allyson Brown went 2-for-4 with two RBIs for Kelseyville and Amanda Mueller went 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Lower Lake had four doubles among its seven hits. Darlena White went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs to lead the way and Bianca Frias went 2-for-3.
“I was happy with the way we hit the ball,” Lower Lake coach Tim Sherrell said.
