Everything I say and do will return to haunt me

I believe that what goes around comes around. I rejoice and give thanks that everything I say and do and everything I don”t say and do will somehow come back to bless me or haunt me.

This used to scare me, and I would stick my head in the “sand”, but today I have the Holy Spirit to help me deal with it. I have made friends with my healthy compunctions and fears enough to keep letting go of my unhealthy shames and terrors. And, this means I have to write one of these repentance letters once in awhile, so I don”t smell like whale barf.

I hereby repent of hypocrisy, for I believe in doing good, but I often settle for merely not doing what I think is bad.

Thank you for hanging in there with me. I invite you to join me in personal repentance — turning from sin to virtue. More importantly, I invite you to join me in collective repentance, as a member of this wonderful yet harmful species.

Let us turn from injuring and killing, to planting and pardoning.

Let us turn from lying, to trying to be honest.

Let us turn from despair and depression, to hope and enthusiasm.

Let us turn from terror and terrorization, to faith and trust.

Let us turn from indifference and hatred, to caring and love.

Let us turn from willful ignorance, to facing the facts openly.

Let us turn from contentiousness, to compassionate communication.

Let us turn from condemning, to gratefully and carefully forgiving and appreciating.

Let us turn from indulgent vanity, to humble reverence or awe.

Let us turn from vicious territoriality, to gentle sharing and gracious hospitality.

Let us turn from torture to nurture.

Let us turn from the sick and the slick, to the healthy and the real.

Let us turn from injustice and war, to justice and peace.

Thank You. (And thank Francis of Assisi).

No justification for denying care to the insured

On Monday, April 14, Consumer Watchdog”s Jerry Flanagan turned the heat up on state regulators and asked them to reinstate coverage for patients whose insurance was illegally canceled. On Thursday, April 17, the California Department of Managed Health Care reinstated coverage for more than a dozen patients, while opening the door to thousands of more reinstatements of coverage.

The victory should be a lesson for health insurers around the nation. Company lawyers can”t use the fine print to get rid of sick patients and increase profits, because a health insurance policy is a contractual promise that cannot be broken.

Heartwarming to know that animals are cared for

I am writing to thank Lake County Animal Care and Control for its recent support to patients at Redbud Community Hospital. When patients are admitted to the hospital in an emergency, they are often very concerned about their pets — especially when there are no friends or family to care for their pets while they are away.

For many, pets are like members of the family. Animal Control has stepped in to help. Recently, Animal Control picked up and cared for a dog that was left unattended inside a patient”s home when he came to the emergency room and had to remain in the hospital. They took the dog to the Animal Control kennel in Lakeport, where it was fed, walked and slept in heated kennels.

They even offered to transport the dog back and forth from the kennel to the hospital, so that the patient could have brief visits. When the patient left the hospital, Animal Control officers were available to help reunite the dog with his owner and provided all the necessary dog-related transportation.

In a second recent instance, an emergency department patient was extremely worried about her cats when she was transferred to another hospital outside the county.

Because of the emergency, several cats were left inside the house without food or water and she was unable to provide next of kin or other contact information. Animal Control worked with the police to gain entry to rescue the indoor cats, provided food and water for the outside cats and they even helped locate next of kin.

In both these instances and many others, Animal Control has gone out of their way to help our patients and their pets. We are grateful for their help and support. Their genuine concern for the people and animals within our community is heartwarming.
