Educators from Konocti Unified School District demonstrated their opposition to the governor”s proposed budget on Wednesday, May 14. About 50 representatives including teachers, paraprofessionals, administrators, board members and students gathered at Dam Road and Highway 53 in Clearlake with signs expressing their displeasure with the governor”s plan to cut spending in education.

“I”m here because I agree with these guys ? budget cuts are bad for the children,” said KUSD board president Herb Gura. “I support the teachers in telling the state they should not balance the budget on the backs of teachers.”

“What are the kids going to do when they come back to school in August and the teachers aren”t there?” asked seven-year Lower Lake Elementary School educator Dawn Felperin. “It”s the most important job in our nation and they (teachers) are the first to get cut.”

Lori Kincaid, a teacher with LLES 12 years, said “We can”t have any more bake sales to fund education.” Kincaid added that she ran out of paper this year and that teachers have to spend their own money for supplies in the classroom.

Bonnie Eagleton, secretary for two years at LLES, said, “I am absolutely appalled as a voter and resident of the state that has the third largest GNP in the world and that we are going to be 50th in spending per student on education.”

Wednesday, May 14, is observed in California as the “Day of the Teacher.” Responding to $4.8 billion in proposed budget cuts to education, the California Teachers Association called for a Statewide Day of Action for public schools on May 14.

“We asked our members to coordinate local activities that day that will bring home our message to local legislators,” the CTA reported on its Web site.

The CTA listed various activities throughout the state of California including stops on a statewide bus tour against proposed budget cuts. Konocti and Lakeport educators also staged demonstrations within their local communities.
