Prior to the Jarvis/Gann Prop 13 bill, homes in Northern California were reasonable. A lot of people retired here for their Golden Years. As California became more populated, people bought second homes or rentals.
So if you retired in one area of California in some cases you could transfer your Prop 13 status to your new home. Not all counties accept Prop 60 but it was voted on by the people and passed. Realtors are not going to inform you of this. You had to be living in your main property in 1978.
Ever since Prop 13 went through counties have been trying to break it or find loopholes. Remember 1978 was thirty years ago we have a larger population now. Homes in Lake County were fairly reasonable and still are compared to Santa Rosa, Napa, Calistoga, Windser, etc.
So young people and residence who couldn”t get prop 13 or 60, your taxes are still low compared to other areas in California. If we let the county in and allow assessments to go on our taxes, Prop 13 and 60 would not be as useful any more and the younger coalition of owners will not be able to afford to live here.
We have many single families here and in many of our families, both parents have to work to meet the mortgage. I have been to South Dakota three times in the last six years. I visited Crazy Horse Monument and was talking to one of the Chiefs. He approximated how many years it would take to finish the monument.
I asked, “Why didn”t they get a grant form the government?” He became slightly irate telling me that if the government got in they would charge an entrance fee and it would not be a place of learning.
We talked for about two hours and he explained this country of ours the USA, was stolen from the red men. They were put on reservations and fed. This monument is to show the world what the red man is made of and can do. The less we have the government involvement, the better off we are.
Look at your payroll stubs and look how much the government takes in taxes; your property taxes, gasoline taxes, and how much goes where it is supposed to? Lake County calls it the general fund. The general fund did not do anything to enhance the community association. We just about get zero for all the taxes we pay. Don”t you love those signs on the highway “Your Tax Dollars At Work.”
