UPDATED:

The fire season is upon us again. Watching the coverage of several of them, brought to mind that although I only heard about the big fire in Lake County years ago to inquire just when it took place.

I went to the library, and with the help of Kathy Jenson, was directed to a file folder of fire information. However, we both knew it was not complete, and the best source of information would be the micro fiche. Not feeling well with a cold, l did not pursue it.

I then asked one of the long time residents, Carmen Carpenter, and she told me it took place in 1964. My understanding of it was that it started in Soda Bay area and wrapped around the mountain to the Riveria West and up the mountain.

One of the fires now going was 600 acres which would cover the whole of Buckingham peninsula. Another fire is 4800 acres which might be a match to the ?64 fire and take in Soda Bay, Riveria Heights and the Riveria West.

So many property owners do not or will not step up and do their part to keep us as safe as we can with full understanding that high winds have a mind of their own. Some live out of the county. State or county, however, this is no excuse.

Could there be a story here? As summer approaches and the tourists come in, l think so.
