Lakeport PD gets grant from ABC
LAKEPORT ? The Lakeport Police Department is launching a two-pronged effort to curb alcohol-related crime, courtesy of an $18,508 grant from the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC). Four training sessions for Lake County businesses licensed to sell alcohol will be scheduled before June 30, 2009, according to Lakeport police officer Destry Henderson, who wrote the grant. ABC representatives will teach the classes, he said. The department will also conduct undercover operations to spot sales to minors and use of fake identification cards, according to Henderson.
“The goal is not to negatively impact businesses, the goal is to educate and deter,” Henderson said.
Burke appointed city manager
LAKEPORT ? Lakeport Police Chief Kevin Burke was appointed acting city manager during the closed-session portion of the July 1 Lakeport City Council meeting, according to Mayor Buzz Bruns. Burke will fill in while City Manager Jerry Gillham is on a second tour of duty in Iraq. Gillham will be deployed to Aug. 6. The city council did not advertise the temporary position, a move that gives the city $100,000 to help close a $1.5 million gap in the city”s budget.
“We wanted to keep it in-house, because we wanted to keep the same momentum we have with Jerry,” Bruns said.
Burke, who has a doctorate and is an attorney, will add Gillham”s duties to his duties as chief of police, according to Bruns, and will be in e-mail contact with Gillham while he is overseas.
