LAKE COUNTY — A 10-year-old girl was injured in a hit-and-run in the Konocti Harbor Resort and Spa parking lot Saturday night, according to the California Highway Patrol. The incident was one of three serious crashes on Saturday. The other two took the lives of two motorcycle riders, according to the CHP.
The 10-year-old was crossing a roadway on the resort property below Dancing Springs Spa when Kelseyville resident Dennis Elsworth Olson, 35, allegedly hit her in his 1995 GMC truck. Olson was driving at an unspecified high speed, was under the influence of alcohol and did not see the girl, according to a Monday CHP press release.
“He (Olson) drove to a parking lot, parked, and a deputy found him in the parked car and detained him until the CHP got there,” CHP officer Mike Humble said.
Olson was arrested on felony charges of hit and run, DUI causing injury and DUI with a blood alcohol level of .08 or more. He posted $10,000 bail and was released Saturday morning, according to Lake County Jail staff.
The girl, whose name could not be released, was flown by REACH helicopter to UC Davis Medical Center with internal injuries and possibly a broken leg, according to Humble.
In other news, two motorcycle riders died Saturday in separate crashes, according to the CHP.
Santa Rosa resident Mansur Balaei, 31, was riding a 2002 Suzuki 1000 west on the Hopland 175 highway with members of the Bay Area Riders For Fun motorcycle group when he hit a guardrail head-on at a curve in the road, according to Humble.
“Apparently, the riders noticed he wasn”t there and pulled over to the side to wait for him. They went back and found him down,” Humble said.
Santa Rosa Memorial Emergency Room nurse Cindy Sizemore performed CPR on Balaei for 20 minutes before he was pronounced dead in an ambulance on his way to a landing zone, where he was to be flown by helicopter to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital, according to Humble.
Nice resident Robert Steinmier, 62, was riding a 2001 Harley Davidson westbound on Highway 20 approaching Morine Ranch Road. According to Humble and the CHP report, Steinmier crossed double yellow lines to pass a 2000 Chevrolet 1500 truck towing a trailer.
The driver of the Chevrolet, who wished to remain anonymous because he fears retribution, was turning left into Flagship Marine. Steinmier tried an illegal pass, hit the back of the truck and was pinned between it and the trailer, according to Humble.
Steinmier was believed to have been under the influence of drugs and alcohol, pending blood test results in two weeks, according to the CHP release. He was pronounced dead on arrival at Redbud Community Hospital.
