LAKEPORT ? The tires on a Kemgas commercial truck carrying 2,200 gallons of propane caught fire Thursday morning, causing its driver to pull over near the Lampson Airport on Highland Springs Road.
“The brakes got hot when I hit a stoplight, and they started sticking a little bit,” Kemgas driver Doug Brown said.
The brakes overheated and caused the truck”s tires to ignite, according to Brown. He said he used a fire extinguisher to snuff the flames, and bystanders at the nearby Sicily”s Italian Restaurant helped. Lakeport Fire Protection District Incident Commander Rick Bergem said the fire was out before firefighters arrived.
“It could have been a lot worse,” Bergem said.
