CLEARLAKE — Richard Gordon Farries, 39, of Clearlake Park was arrested late Saturday night on charges of robbery and battery on a person.
According to Clearlake Police Sgt. Mike Hermann, Farries was attempting to steal alcohol and meat from Safeway when store employees confronted him.
In his attempt to escape, Farries reportedly struck a store employee. Safeway personnel managed to tackle the suspect and detain him until officers arrived.
Sgt. Hermann said because Farries used violence as a means of escape, he was charged with robbery rather than shoplifting.
Hermann further stated that it will be the decision of the District Attorney”s Office as to what charges Farries will face in court.
Farries had been released on $1,000 bail the day prior, Aug. 2, after being booked on charges of disorderly conduct with alcohol involved.
A clerk at the District Attorney”s Office said charges filed against Farries on Aug. 4 include a felony charge for robbery and a charge for disorderly conduct, which is a misdemeanor.
