Oddly enough just today I was having a conversation with a gentleman at the local Coffee Roastery. He”s a good guy, who votes Republican. I”m a good woman, who is not a Republican. Still, we held a respectful discourse with each other pertaining to the subject of our country”s readiness to see beyond the color of skin; or gender as well.
He doesn”t believe Hillary would have made it ? because, once again, the people of America are not ready to elect a woman; as she could never be the leader of a powerful country such as America. And then he asked me to name some other powerful countries, who had a woman at the helm.
Firstly, I pointed out that Obama is of both Caucasian and African heritage; it was obvious that he didn”t know this. Then, I rattled off a couple of powerful world countries that were headed by women; like Great Briton, Germany, India, Israel, Pakistan, etc. He didn”t hear me; perhaps I should have broached the subject of past civilizations, before and after Christ.
He continued politely and reiterated his position regarding the American people not being ready to have a man with African heritage or a woman at the helm. Maybe a course in the anthropology of the origins of humanity would be illuminating.
I let him know that if this was true, then we as a nation, which is supposedly based upon freedom and equal rights, had lost our way; and that we could no longer consider ourselves as a world leader in anything, not even Capitalism, as that disease has taken off well, all around the planet; and further that we had become the same as all previous ?superior” world factions before us, such as Rome, Egypt, the British Empire, Germany, etc…
And then I said… “Scotty, beam me up.” I think he got it.
We both laughed, extended our hands, and agreed that this was the beauty of our country. The right to free speech ? free thinking and the right to agree to disagree in peace.
