ARCATA — Sonoma Valley High School shut out Clear Lake High School”s varsity girls” soccer team 3-0 in the opening round of the Arcata Tournament on Friday in Arcata.

Sonoma Valley, coming off a 1-0 win over Sonoma Academy earlier this week, led 2-0 after the first half.

“They”re a really good team,” Clear Lake co-coach Paul Larrea said of the Class 3A Dragons, one of the top large school teams in the Redwood Empire this season. “We played very well, but we made a couple of mistakes that they capitalized on.”

Clear Lake”s defense also played well, according to Larrea.

“Anisa Green did a great job and Mori Jordan made some great saves in the net,” Larrea said.

Other standouts were Erin O”Rourke and Rachel Thornton at marking back and Elena Tipton in the midfield, according to Larrea.

Clear Lake had a handful of scoring opportunities but couldn”t convert.

“It very easily could have been 3-2, but their goalie made some nice saves, too,” Larrea said.

Clear Lake (1-1), a Class A team, will play two more 3A schools today ? Eureka at 8 a.m. and Fortuna at 11 a.m.

“In the long run it will make us better,” Larrea said about playing such tough competition in the early part of the season. “Pretty much the rest of the season we”ll be playing Class A teams.”
