MIDDLETOWN — No one can ever say the Middletown Mustangs aren”t a forward thinking team.

Brittany Cash”s goal late in the first half proved to be the game-winning shot on Thursday as Middletown blanked the Upper Lake Cougars 1-0 in a non-league varsity girls” soccer contest at Middletown.

Middletown improved to 2-0 while spoiling Upper Lake”s season debut. Cash”s goal 33 minutes into the first half broke a scoreless tie.

A freshman, Cash took a pass from forward Kaitlyn Agapoff, who received the assist, and chipped the ball into the backside corner.

“It”s the type of shot that needs to be almost perfect for it to go in,” Middletown coach Louise Owens said.

All three of Middletown”s forwards were in on the scoring play, according to Owens. Before Agapoff could work the ball up to Cash for her shot, forward Taylor Sloan fed the ball to Agapoff.

Middletown”s defense allowed only a handful of shots, led by the play of Amber Preusser, Kaitlyn August and Emily Beckwith.

“Those three did a nice job,” Owens said.

Upper Lake keeper Amanda Wright had 12 saves.

“We looked really good, I was very impressed with our offense and defense,” Upper Lake coach Anna Santana said. “It was a hell of a game.”

“Their style of play really messes with us,” Owens said. “They like to crowd us and it gets us off our game.”
