MIDDLETOWN — Minus three starters for disciplinary reasons, the Middletown Mustangs lost the first two games in their best-of-five match with the Upper Lake Cougars on Thursday evening in Middletown.

But the Mustangs, who have high hopes for a big season in 2008, came storming back to beat Upper Lake 21-25, 23-25, 25-13, 25-16, 15-13 in a non-league varsity volleyball match at Middletown.

It was the season opener for both clubs.

“I thought we were done after the second game,” Middletown coach Jennifer Breiner said. “But the girls worked really hard to come back ? they pulled it out.”

Playing so many starters out of position led to the slow start against Upper Lake, according to Breiner, who said the steady play of setters Sarah Tucker and Jenny McGee helped the Mustangs pull it back together over the final three games.

Kayla Wood led the Cougars with 25 kills and seven blocks, while Morgan D”Amico had 15 kills and six blocks in her varsity debut.
