LAKE COUNTY — Artist Kathy Wolden was recognized August 22 at the Lake County Community Co-Op”s (LCCC) Friday Night Farmers” Market for her winning design of the Co-Op”s logo.
The contest was announced June 14 and ran through August 5. It received entries from several area artists. Wolden”s design will be used for various Co-Op publications.
The logo contest results were one small part of the night”s festivities, which also featured live entertainment and free organic ice cream.
Attendees were able to purchase locally grown fruit and vegetables directly from vendors as well as other items like honey and goat cheese.
Chairperson JoAnn Saccato is ecstatic with the organization”s progress so far.
“Having a logo contest was important to the organization as a whole, because co-ops are about democracy in the community. It brought more community into the vision. For us to have membership and community buy-in is a must if we are to succeed.”
The LCCC also holds other weekly events including the Buying Club, where members may purchase organic and locally grown produce.
Although its impact may seem small now, the organization has large ambitions.
“The Co-op continues to work toward its vision of co-creating sustainable community with healthy and local food through such avenues as our Friday Night Farmers” Market, our Buying Club and the upcoming community garden project in Clearlake.”
The LCCC began working toward building a community garden at Clearlake”s Highlands Senior Service Center in cooperation with the County of Lake and the City of Clearlake.
The Lake County Board of Supervisors has awarded the Co-Op $40,000 to begin the project.
