SANTA ROSA — Now in his third season as the Middletown High School varsity boys” soccer coach, Lee Hoage experienced two firsts on Friday as the Mustangs shut out Summerfield Waldorf 2-0 in a non-league game at Middletown.

The win was Middletown”s second straight after back-to-back 7-0 losses to Anderson Valley and Calistoga to open the season, lifting the Mustangs to the .500 mark.

“I”ve never been .500 and I”ve never won two in a row,” Hoage said. “It feels great.”

Middletown scored a goal in each half. The first came on a shot by Cesar Rodriguez, with an assist by William Phelps. The Mustangs picked up an insurance goal in the second half thanks to Jose Molina, who also scored twice in a 5-2 win over Upper Lake on Thursday.

“We”re still too up and down,” Hoage said. “We”re trying to find more consistency.”

The Mustangs were led on defense by sweeper Jason Hill and keeper Tyler Madsen.

“Hill wasn”t feeling well, but he won the ball at key moments of the game,” Hoage said. “He really came through for us.”

Madsen made four diving saves to keep Summerfield Waldorf off the scoreboard.

Middletown returns to action Monday in Napa against Justin-Siena at 4:30 p.m.
