WALNUT CREEK — Kelseyville High School”s defense spent more time on the field than the Knights” offense, never a good thing, and the Berean Christian Eagles built a 28-0 halftime lead en route to a 43-7 victory over Kelseyville in a non-league varsity football game Saturday in Walnut Creek.

Special teams play put the Knights in a hole several times, according to Kelseyville head coach Thad Owens, who said the Eagles returned two punts and two kickoffs inside the Knights” 20-yard line.

“Our cover teams on punts and kickoffs did not get the job done,” Owens said. “It”s hard to defend that.”

Kelseyville”s pass coverage also broke down twice, resulting in a pair of long touchdown passes.

“They”re a good team, physical, quick and fast, and their linemen do a good job of getting off the line of scrimmage,” Owens said of the Eagles. “There”s nothing fancy about their offense. They made no major mistakes and were just on the field constantly.”

Kelseyville had just one possession in the fourth quarter.

The Knights” lone score came on a 52-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Michael Davis to sophomore tight end Michael Allen in the third quarter. Both players were making their varsity debut as was sophomore running back/linebacker Nick Rodriguez.

“The sophomores were fantastic,” Owens said.

Davis completed 3 of 8 passes for 86 yards and no interceptions, while Allen had two catches for 85 yards. Rodriguez recovered a fumble.

“Davis was under a whole lot of pressure, but he didn”t make any bad decisions,” Owens said. “He didn”t throw any interceptions and he didn”t fumble.”

Linebacker Dustin Panos” nine tackles led the Kelseyville defense. J.J. Pine had six tackles, including a sack.

Kelseyville (0-1) travels to Lakeport on Friday to play Clear Lake (1-0).

“I”m really looking forward to that,” Owens said.
