LAKEPORT – You can run away from your problems if you”re fast enough. Just ask Kevin Burt.
Burt, a junior running back for the Clear Lake High School varsity football team, left his problems, namely the Willits Wolverines, out of sight and out of mind Friday night as the Cardinals handled the Wolverines 26-2 in a North Central League I interlock game at Don Owens Stadium.
Burt rushed for 170 yards and two touchdowns, both on 40-yard TD runs to close out the scoring in a 26-0 first half.
The Cardinals improved to 2-0-1 on the season with the win and 15-0-2 in their last 17 regular-season games.
Clear Lake”s defense thoroughly bottled up the Wolverines, who barely made it into Clear Lake territory in the first half despite three Cardinal turnovers. Willits finished with just 35 total yards and three first downs, two by penalty.
A 54-yard pass from quarterback Ryan Richardson to wide receiver Chris Leloup opened the scoring five minutes into the game. The Cardinals added 20 more points in the second quarter, the first six on a Richardson 1-yard run. Burt”s first 40-yard run with 6:30 remaining made it 20-0, and his second 40-yard run with 4:10 left pushed that lead to 26-0.
The Wolverines, now 0-3 on the season, scored their only points in the third quarter when they blocked a Clear Lake punt out of the end zone for a safety. They”ve scored just eight points in their three losses.
