KELSEYVILLE – Forget about homecoming night. It was Steven Grossner”s night on Friday as Kelseyville pounded the St. Helena Saints 37-21 in a North Central League I interlock varsity football game.
Grossner was everywhere on offense and defense for the Knights (1-1-1), who nailed down their first victory of 2008 in convincing fashion. The junior running back caught three touchdown passes thrown by quarterback Mike Davis, ran for a fourth score to spark Kelseyville”s offense, and he also led the defense with seven unassisted tackles, six assists and two fumble recoveries.
“He was a force,” Kelseyville coach Thad Owens said of Grossner, who rushed for 142 yards, including a 50-yard TD in the fourth quarter.
Grossner also caught 15-, 13- and 11-yard touchdown passes from Davis, who went 6-for-10 for 99 yards.
Grossner wasn”t the only dynamo on offense for the Knights. Troy Davis rushed for a team-best 165 yards and a touchdown.
“Troy Davis was a horse in there with his runs up the middle, and Mike Davis threw some nice passes that Grossner put himself in a position to catch.”
Owens said the poise shown by Mike Davis, who is only a sophomore, was veteran-like.
“He threw no interceptions and he threw good, high-percentage stuff,” Owens said.
Owens also credited the seniors on the team with “pulling everybody together.”
Tony Mendez also booted a 38-yard field goal for the Knights, who outscored the Saints 13-0 in the third quarter for a commanding 30-14 lead.
