Highlights

Special teams — Middletown”s PAT machine Danny Beckweith went 5-for-5 against Cloverdale and is now 14-for-14 for the season. Kelseyville”s Tony Mendez booted a 38-yard field goal against St. Helena.

Defense — Clear Lake”s Ryan Richardson intercepted his third and fourth passes of the season. Kelseyville”s Steven Grossner recovered two fumbles to go along with seven solo stops and six assists. Middletown”s Jake Davis had 1 1/2 sacks and a fumble recovery.

And they won comfortably anyway — Clear Lake coughed up the ball six times in its win over Willits, losing the turnover battle 6-3. One reason the Cardinals won was a defense that allowed only 35 total yards and three first downs, two by penalty.

Talk about a night — Kelseyville junior Steven Grossner rushed for 142 yards and a TD, had 51 receiving yards and three more TDs, recovered two fumbles and had 13 total tackles against St. Helena.

Streaks (continued) — Clear Lake is unbeaten in its last 17 regular-season games (15-0-2).

Streaks (ended) — Lower Lake head coach Stan Weiper”s streak of 14 straight wins over Upper Lake ended with a thud Friday night at Gordon Sadler Field. Before Friday, the last time Weiper lost to Upper Lake was in 1993, the same year that Upper Lake coach Airic Guerrero graduated from Middletown.

Interesting Week 4 matchups — Clear Lake (2-0-1) travels to Middletown on Friday night and Upper Lake (2-1) hosts Kelseyville (1-1-1) on Saturday. The Lake County football scene will either become crystal clear or completely muddied by late Saturday afternoon.

Speaking of Upper Lake vs. K”ville — Both teams will have something to shoot for since Kelseyville has won 14 straight meetings between the two teams.

Upper Lake vs. Lower Lake stats — Coach Airic Guerrero did phone in some of them early Saturday morning, but they were reported too late to be included in Saturday”s edition of the Bee.

Just for the heck of it — Omar Vizquel, future Hall of Famer.

From the O.J. files — Nah, never mind. The Juice stopped being relevant long ago.

Feed him the ball — Upper Lake running back Joe Barnes told head coach Airic Guerrero that he wanted the ball at least 20 times against Lower Lake. “I gave him the ball a little more than that (32 times). He kept going and kept going and was able to find a way to squeeze through (the Lower Lake defense). Most of his yards came between the tackles,” Guerrero said of Barnes” 211-yard night.

Broken play — Running back Max Dixon of Middletown turned a broken play into a 73-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter against Cloverdale, sealing the Mustangs” victory.

A movie worth seeing — Miracle at St. Anna, but leave the children at home. The Nazis aren”t nice guys.
