MARYSVILLE — No one felt worse about Mendocino College”s 1-0 women”s soccer loss to Yuba College on Tuesday afternoon than did stopper Lauren Moses.
“She touched the ball into our goal,” Mendocino assistant coach Pat Hart said of the own-goal right before the end of the first half that accounted for the game”s only score. “We have not had great luck against Yuba in past years.”
It was the conference opener for both teams and Mendocino struggled to put together much of an attack against Yuba, according to Hart.
“We had one or two chances,” Hart said.
Nevertheless, Hart said the Eagles (7-3-1), and especially Moses, turned in a strong effort.
“She was absolutely excellent,” Hart said of Moses. “The team did a really good job supporting her. No one looked at her the wrong way. This team is hanging together really well.”
Mendocino”s strong play on defense included keeper Candy Diener stopping a penalty kick in the second half.
The Eagles return to action Friday against Solano in Fairfield at 3:30 p.m. They return home Tuesday to play Contra Costa College.
