Highlights

Special teams — Technically he”s still perfect … as in Middletown placekicker Danny Beckwith, who went 4-for-5 on his extra-point kicks Friday night against Clear Lake. His first attempt was blocked. Beckwith entered the game 14-for-14 on the season.

Defense — Upper Lake defensive back Sloan Hennig picked off two Kelseyville passes as the Cougar defense came up big when it needed to in its homecoming victory over the Knights.

Speaking of homecoming — Both of Upper Lake”s teams won. The junior varsity Cougars beat Kelseyville 14-0 for their first win of the season.

Speaking of JV teams — Middletown”s undefeated JV club scored touchdowns on its first three offensive plays in a 46-0 victory over Clear Lake.

Don”t see it often — Upper Lake picked up a first down on a fourth-and-inches play in the first quarter against Kelseyville, but the Cougars were flagged for “aiding the runner,” which carries a loss of down, so the Knights took over on downs.

Streaks (active) — Since moving to the east sideline on their homefield, the Upper Lake Cougars are undefeated (2-0). That streak will be put to the test this coming Saturday against Middletown.

Streaks (ended) — Upper Lake snapped a 14-game losing streak to Kelseyville.

You could have gotten great odds in Vegas ? Had you bet on Upper Lake being 3-1 after the first four weeks of the season.

Bad start for the Trojans — Cloverdale led 20-0 after only four minutes against Lower Lake on Friday night. The Eagles returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown and then scored again just moments after Lower Lake fumbled away the ensuing kickoff. The Trojans also had a punt blocked on their first offensive series that led to another Cloverdale score.

Misquoted — Middletown coach Bill Foltmer was misquoted near the end of the Clear Lake-Middletown game story that appeared in Saturday”s edition of the Record-Bee. The final quote in the game story was not correct, according to Record-Bee freelance writer Rob Grant, who covered the game. Grant didn”t have his tape recorder and made an honest mistake while taking notes.

They were all wet … and still called — Clear Lake assistant coach Mike Hansen and Lower Lake head coach Stan Weiper were trying to read stats off of wet and smeared paper Friday night, Hansen from Middletown and Weiper in Cloverdale, where their respective games were played in a steady rainfall. They both lost big, but they called in their results to the newspaper anyway. They”ll both be leading a seminar for some of the county”s soccer coaches later this year.

Battle of 3-1 teams — … When Middletown calls on Upper Lake Saturday afternoon. The winner will have Lake County”s best record at the midway point of the season.

Karma — O.J. Simpson.

Sarah Palin has me beat — I can”t see Russia from my house, just the economy falling apart.

Hey, he just scores TDs — Middletown backup running back Max Dixon.
