LAKEPORT — Clear Lake”s defense shut down St. Vincent forwards Danielle Garcia and Lauren Beauchamp, but Sarah Iniquez scored goals in each half to lift the Mustangs past the Cardinals 2-0 in a North Central League I South varsity girls” soccer match on Tuesday in Lakeport.
In a battle of perennial NCL I South powerhouses, the Mustangs improved to 2-0 in the league standings while Clear Lake fell to 1-1 and 9-5-1 overall.
“We didn”t play badly tonight,” Clear Lake coach Paul Larrea said. “It was a good game.”
Iniquez broke up a scoreless deadlock eight minutes before halftime. She added her second goal two minutes into the second half to make it 2-0.
Clear Lake had limited scoring opportunities, according to Larrea.
“We didn”t have a lot, maybe four or five,” Larrea said. “We had a breakaway in the second but didn”t get it in.”
Megan McDonald filled in most of the second half at goalie as starter Mori Jordan was forced to leave the game because of illness.
“She did a great job, probably had eight or nine saves,” Larrea said.
The Cardinals also received strong efforts from Anisa Green and marking back Ashley Perry, who helped neutralize St. Vincent”s powerful Garcia-Beauchamp attack.
“She did an outstanding job,” Larrea added.
St. Vincent improved to 10-1-1.
Clear Lake hits the road Thursday for an NCL I South match at Upper Lake. The Cardinals remain on the road Saturday to play Sonoma Academy, a 3-0 winner over St. Vincent late last month.
