LOWER LAKE — Jason Candelario scored twice to lead the Middletown Mustangs to a 4-1 win over the Lower Lake Trojans in North Central League I North varsity boys” soccer action on Tuesday in Lower Lake.

Lower Lake (0-4) scored early in the first half for a 1-0 lead and held it until Candelario tied it with three minutes remaining in the half.

“We started real slow,” Middletown coach Lee Hoage said. “They didn”t have that aggressiveness in the first half, that intensity. They didn”t have the urgency to finish shots.”

Luis Pimentel”s goal early in the second half put the Mustangs ahead to stay. William Phelps added a header goal and Candelario”s second goal of the game made it 4-1.

Middletown has four North games remaining, beginning with a home game Thursday against Willits, who the Mustangs lost to 2-1 on Sept. 30 in Willits.

“We have to take that game if we”re going to have any chance,” Hoage said of a possible at-large berth in the playoffs. “It”s a must-win game.”

The Mustangs are 6-9 overall.
