KELSEYVILLE — Mike Davis returned two interceptions for touchdowns and also had a 53-yard touchdown pass as the Kelseyville Knights hammered the Willits Wolverines 47-0 in a North Central League I North football game at Kelseyville.
Coming off a 62-19 loss to Fort Bragg in their league opener the previous week, a banged up Kelseyville squad took out their frustrations on the winless Wolverines (0-2, 0-7).
“They ran a spread offense on all but two plays and passed quite a bit, so that created a lot of opportunities for us,” Kelseyville coach Thad Owens said of three Kelseyville interceptions.
Davis returned his first interception 64 yards to give the Knights a 25-0 lead in the second quarter. His 53-yard pass to Mike Allen pushed that lead to 32-0 by halftime.
In the third quarter, Davis opened the scoring with a 48-yard interception return.
“Mike Davis was all over the field,” Owens said. “He”s really good at seeing the ball, reading the quarterback and getting to the right spot.”
With one starting running back (Steven Grossner) out and another (Troy Davis) slowed by an injury, the Knights relied on Nick Rodrgiuez (19 carries for 85 yards, 2 TDs), Mike Duman (14 carries for 72 yards, TD) and Morgan Nelson (20 carries for 70 yards) to move the ball on the ground.
Kelseyville”s special teams also contributed as kicker Tony Mendez booted a pair of field goals, a 35-yard in the first quarter and a 34-yarder in the fourth quarter.
“It”s the first time we”ve played a complete game this year,” Owens said.
Kelseyville is now 1-1 in league and 3-3-1 overall.
The Knights host another winless team — Lower Lake (0-1, 0-7) — next Friday.
