SANTA ROSA — Lisa Copeland of Middletown High School tied for the second lowest round during the North Coast Section Girls” Golf Championships on Monday at the Oak-mont East Course and will advance to next week”s Tournament of Champions on the Oakmont West Course.
Copeland fired a 5-over-par 71, the same score as Whitney Vau of Ukiah. Low round went to Sage Romberg of Ukiah at 68.
The top four teams and the low 12 scorers who are not associated with the top four teams advance to the TOC.
Branson of Ross won the team competition with 441. McKinleyville was next at 445, Santa Rosa had 487 and Ukiah 489.
The only other Lake County golfer in the field besides Copeland, Kelseyville”s Liz Berry, fired a 94 and missed the TOC cut by four strokes.
“I think she has a good chance,” Kelseyville coach John Berry said when asked about the prospects of Copeland advancing past the TOC and reaching the NorCals the following week.
The West course should play more to Copeland”s style, according to Berry, who added that Copeland has more course familiarity with the West course from her competition in other amateur events as well as high school events.
“I think her game is rounding into shape for this,” Berry said of the TOC, where only the top three teams and four golfers not associated with the top three teams move on to the NorCals.
Copeland was one of only two girls who teed it up along with the boys during the Coastal Mountain Conference season this past spring. Berry was the other.
